7th Annual Sarasota Bay Watch Scallop Search

Posted by William True on

Snag your snorkel and fins and get ready for an adventurous morning! Sarasota Bay Watch will be hosting their 7th annual scallop search on August 23rd.  This family fun activity is designed to help monitor (not harvest) the bay’s scallop population and to support and promote the scientific study of scallops.

Bay Scallop Search 2014

Bay Scallop season takes place every year from July 1st- the end of September and is the window of opportunity for non-commercial enthusiasts to harvest scallops.  Bay scalloping zones do not run into the Sarasota County water boundaries, but organizations such as the Sarasota Bay Watch enjoy keeping a close eye on the scallop population.

The scallop search will begin at 9am, sharp, and launch from Mar Vista Restaurant & Pub on the north end of Longboat Key.  A complementary lunch will be offered by Mar Vista Restaurant when the search is over at 12:30. It is recommend for all who participate to bring sunscreen, a hat, diving gloves, a mask, snorkel, fins, and drinking water.

This will be a fun filled morning so don’t miss out! Registration is required so be sure to sign-up before capacity is reached. For more information or if you’d like to sponsor the event please visit the Sarasota Bay Watch website.
